CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD
Katherine "Kitty" A. Kinsman

Greetings Chamber Members,

Rapid City is a great destination and the PLACE TO BE!  The Chamber and its many partners are making things happen.   As Chairman for 2008, I am optimistic about the opportunities to advance Rapid City, and the Black Hills Community as a great place to live, play, get an education and do business.   These are important values to our members, to residents and to those who would like to move their businesses and families here.

The Chamber is a catalyst for initiatives that make our community a better place.  Its talented, energetic staff, board and committees; through its policy advocacy and partnerships, shape Rapid City’s future.  In the coming year the Chamber leadership will focus its attention in three vital areas:

EMPHASIS GOALS:

1. Developing The Core – Our City Centre should become a focal point for residents and visitors alike.  It should be a destination, a “gathering place” with a productive mix of retail, dining, entertainment, arts, living spaces and business offices enhanced by streetscaping, pedestrian friendly walk and bikeways, and a blend of parking alternatives.  Great work is already underway by our elected officials, Downtown Association, Chamber, CVB, private businesses, etc. and we will build upon that work.

2. Expanding Network Opportunities for Emerging Businesses – Our area is becoming home to new businesses and workers.  They are technology-driven, technology-dependent, knowledgeable workers who conduct business and research around the globe from small offices or their homes in the Black Hills.  Their mode of work can often mean isolation from others with similar interests and from the community.  We will explore how to enhance their networking opportunities and understand what can be done to help their businesses thrive so we can engage their talents in our community.   The new “Young Professionals Group” is a great example of a Chamber-driven network opportunity designed for the “40 and under” group.

3. Effective Political Action – Proper community growth requires effective policy advocacy and effective elected officials at all levels of government.  The Chamber engages in the political process as an advocate on issues and through sponsorship of candidate forums.  This year we’ll be taking a fresh look at the Chamber’s role to assess what, if any, changes we need to make in the political arena to assure a vibrant business and economic climate.

Thanks for the opportunity to serve. I’m looking forward to a great year, so let’s Make It Happen!!
