Tourism

Rapid City visitors often say “If we had known there was so much to do and see in and around Rapid City, we’d have planned to stay longer!” Rapid City shines as the center of the legendary Black Hills region. From Native American culture and Western history to breathtaking natural beauty amid fine shopping and a vibrant dining district, you will find a wealth of opportunities in Rapid City.

Just minutes away, the 1.3 million-acre Black Hills National Forest abounds with wildlife, spectacular scenery and outdoor recreational opportunities. Crowned by one of America’s most unwavering symbols – Mount Rushmore National Memorial – the Black Hills are also home to Wind Cave National Park, Badlands National Park, Devils Tower National Monument, Jewel Cave National Monument and Minuteman Missile National Historic Site. Come face-to-face with bighorn sheep and mighty American bison in Custer State Park. Discover Native American culture at Crazy Horse Memorial or hike Harney Peak, the highest point east of the Rockies.

Rapid City is close to the outdoor adventures of the Black Hills, but with all the comforts of home, including plentiful lodging options, varied dining, unique shopping, art galleries and museums. A self-guided tour allows visitors to easily explore the attractions and activities throughout Rapid City. As you stroll through the downtown district of the most patriotic city in the U.S.— as named by Rand McNally and USA Today— you will discover life-size bronze sculptures of past U.S. presidents on nearly every corner. Main Street Square, an inviting gathering place in downtown Rapid City, provides the perfect venue for outdoor events centered around water fountains in the summer and an ice skating rink in the winter. Be sure to take a ride on the City View Trolley, which will carry you to many of Rapid City’s most popular attractions.

With more than 5,400 hotel rooms and airline service from seven of the nation’s busiest airports (Chicago, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Denver, Las Vegas, Minneapolis, PhoenixMesa and Salt Lake City), it’s easy to see why millions of people make Rapid City their vacation destination each year.
